"We try to support conservative treatment, but we also have to be realistic," says Dr. Kapteyn, who is dually trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine. "However, if a patient doesn't do well with conservative treatments, we work closely with the patient's surgeon to consider surgical options."

Dr. Kapteyn's fact sheet and research interest.

The Pain Relief Center provides care for a wide variety of problems:

  • Back pain and headaches
  • Orthopedic injuries and joint pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Tendonitis
  • Scoliosis
  • Neuropathy and neuropathic pain syndromes, including those experienced by patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury
  • Spasticity
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Less common diagnoses such as hypermobility

Partnering for Patient Care

The Pain Relief Center at Drake will work with the primary treating physician in implementing a multidisciplinary approach for pain relief. Our evaluation will include medication recommendations as well as evaluation by behavioral medicine, integrative medicine, and trained rehab therapy staff. It may also include interventional techniques. We attempt to reduce the need for medications, and will encourage this.

  • Drake does not manage long-term prescribing of controlled substance type medications.
  • The expectation is the patient's primary medical doctor will eventually assume prescribing for all medications.
  • If a controlled substance medication is prescribed, we recommend that the prescription be filled at Drake's outpatient pharmacy.
  • If a controlled substance is prescribed, patients must strictly abide by the rules of the controlled substance treatment agreement.
  • The expectation is that patients will follow each and every recommendation of the treatment plan. Failure to do so may result in discharge from the clinic.
