Pilates

The Pilates Program based on movement therapy principles developed by Joseph Pilates, focuses on coordinated muscle contractions in proper postural alignment to maximize the benefits of strengthening, flexibility and agility. The program includes mat and reformer-based activities with use of various props to assist, modify or progress the difficulty of the program.

Pilates exercise programs can meet the needs of those individuals recovering from injury or illness, those wanting to maintain the benefits from a rehabilitation program, and those wanting an overall fitness and conditioning program. Pilates addresses the entire body: building long, lean muscles, increasing abdominal and core strength, improving flexibility, coordination and posture, and reducing stress on the joints. The Pilates system of exercises and movement patterns can be adapted for men and women of all ages, all activity levels, and all medical diagnosis to address their specific goals for rehabilitation and fitness. By incorporating multiple muscle groups and focusing on proper breathing throughout the exercise routines, participants improve strength, coordination and agility, and gain more total positive mind/body awareness.

At Drake Center, our instructors are physical therapists who are also certified in Pilates. Therapists design individualized exercise programs that address personal fitness and rehabilitation needs in a safe and effective way.

Pilates for Parkinson's

Balance, coordination and fluid body movements become more challenging for individuals with Parkinson's. A Pilates program can be very effective in reducing rigidity, relaxing muscles, improving balance and posture, and making everyday movement easier. A focus on core strength and stability, and more fluid movement of the arms and legs can improve walking for individuals with Parkinson's. Incorporating proper breathing techniques throughout the exercise program also facilitates overall physical condition.

Pilates for cancer

Exercise is an important part of recovery and healing for individuals with cancer. Through exercise you can improve circulation and metabolism to allow for more intensive treatment with fewer side effects, promote detoxification after treatment, reduce fatigue, and maintain and improve muscle tone, strength and flexibility. Pilates programs are ideal because they can be adapted during each session to fit your level of fitness and fatigue. Pilates is low impact and reduces stress on the joints. It is a safe means of exercise for those undergoing aggressive treatments.

Pilates for women's wellness

A main focus in Pilates is strengthening of the core musculature: abdominals, back muscles and the pelvic floor. These muscles are important in maintaining good posture, managing stress incontinence, and reducing the risk of overstretched and weakened muscles associated with pregnancy. Our medically trained staff understands how a woman's body changes at each trimester of pregnancy and how to design a progressive program to support these changes safely. Increasing body awareness with a focus on proper alignment of the spine can help reduce the painful effects of osteoporosis. The gentle yet effective loading of the joints with Pilates exercises is a safe way to increase bone density and improve joint health.

Pilates for back pain

Because Pilates focuses on strengthening the core muscles (abdominals, back and hip muscles) and improving flexibility and posture, it is a great program for relieving low back pain. The exercises teach your body proper spine alignment and train your muscles to support and stabilize the spine, thereby reducing stress on the joints and discs. Pilates is a low impact exercise program. It is safe for participants with degenerative disc and joint problems, and most postoperative or non-surgical diagnoses.

Pilates for sports rehab and conditioning

Through Pilates you can increase mind-body awareness and control your body. This is important to developing balance, coordination, and agility, which are essential for athletes at the top of their sport. The exercises can be modified to provide assistance or resistance to movement, making Pilates an ideal option for early treatment of acute and post-surgical athletic injuries. Rehab can begin much sooner than with traditional exercise programs.
